Urinary Incontinence

Urinary incontinence (leaking) affects up to 40% of Australian women. Women’s Health Physiotherapy is an effective treatment option to help you manage your symptoms.

Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI)

SUI is leakage that occurs with activities such as coughing, sneezing, laughing and running.

SUI is most often due to a weak pelvic floor that is unable to support the bladder and urethra. Pelvic floor weakness can be caused by pregnancy, childbirth, chronic coughs/vomiting, constipation and increased BMI. These factors can all put extra pressure on the pelvic floor which can stretch and weaken the pelvic floor over time.

Other factors that may contribute to this leakage include breathing patterns and the biomechanics of the ribs, pelvis and spine. In cases of SUI occurring with exercise, your symptoms may also be worsened by your running / landing technique.

Urgency and Urge Urinary Incontinence

Urinary urgency is the sudden, overwhelming desire to pass urine that is difficult to defer and may lead to leakage (urge urinary incontinence). These symptoms can be triggered by activities such as putting the key in the door, arriving home in the car or the sound of running water; it can also occur at random intervals.

These symptoms are often caused by the bladder muscle squeezing on the bladder to empty urine out at inappropriate times. Contributing factors can include your pelvic floor, hormones, bowels, bladder habits, medications, consumption of bladder irritants and fluid intake.

Overactive bladder is the name given to a collection of symptoms including urgency, urge urinary incontinence, frequency (needing to use the bathroom often) and nocturia (waking up more than once overnight to pass urine).
