Pregnancy ‘aches & pains’

Pregnancy is a time of immense physical change for your body and is often accompanied by specific ‘aches & pains’. Browse below to read about the many pregnancy related conditions we treat.

  • Sacroiliac joint (SIJ) pain

SIJ pain is felt at the back of the pelvis on either the left, right or both sides. This pain may radiate into your buttocks or the back of your thighs.

It is often made worse with walking, rolling in bed, getting out of the car, climbing stairs or standing up from a chair.

  • Pubic Symphysis (pubic bone) pain

Pubic symphysis pain is felt directly over your pubic bone and may radiate down your inner thighs.

It is often made worse with walking, rolling in bed, getting out of the car, climbing stairs or standing up from a chair.

  • Side of hip pain (particularly with sleeping)

Pain on the side of your hip when sleeping is quite common in pregnancy.

It is often aggravated by lying on the sore side at night time, but may eventuate to becoming painful during the day with prolonged sitting, walking or stair climbing.

  • Back pain

Pregnancy related back pain may be experienced in the upper back (thoracic) or lower back (lumbar).

It is often due to postural changes, muscle imbalances and the increased weight from your growing abdomen.

  • Carpal Tunnel

Carpal tunnel is characterised by pain and/or numbness in the first 3-4 fingers.

It is thought to be due to peripheral swelling during pregnancy and can be aggravated by certain hand positions.

  • Round ligament pain

Round ligament pain is felt in your lower abdomen. It is often brought on by brisk walking or changing direction quickly. It will ease almost as soon as you stop moving.

It is caused by ‘spasming’ in the round ligaments as they work to keep your uterus ‘in position’ as you move.
